Giovinazzo, Apulia, South Italy.
We are in what was, decades ago, the largest steel mill in southern Italy. Hundreds of men were employed in this great industrial reality of this small town.
My father was one of those hundreds of men.
Now this steel mill lies silent and lonely. Tears of asbestos continue to penetrate the soil that hosts it.
A polluting monster. That same asbestos that covered the noisy industrial machinery has crept into the lungs of its historic workers.
My father is still here with me. Some of his fellow workers are no longer here.
